  • SBS 2008 rebuild, re-joining old clients - quick pointers

Posted on May 29th, 2009 servbit2 No comments

    hi all

we put out our 1st SBS 2008 network last wekend, joining the existing old XP clients to the new domain. Clients were set up at client’s request with Outook 2003 pulling in new mail by POP3 at the clients, then synching with Exchange. Clients are using OST cached Exchange.

Long story short, whilst the network itself completed and worked fine, with the XP clients all set up fine and old mail imported, Trend WFBS 5.1 has screwed the server, and I’m currently rebuilding it as we speak.

Unfortunately I didn’t take a snapshot or export the exchange or AD data, but once the server is up, I do have access to:

    A. a native SBS 2008 full backup of the server, with all exchange dat within it.

    B. the old clients all sat on the network with the OST files in their local profiles.

Once the server is up, what ’s quickest/easiest way for me to join them all to the domain WITHOUT having to rebuild and recreate/import everything all over again, if there is one? Not really been in this situation before…

I probably should have been asking this before the rebuild, but TBH i was about to chuck it though the window before putting the discs in lol.

    Thanks

I had to rebuild a friends SBS 2008 server 2 weeks ago after he played I.T. Guy on it…..heh… and I had to rejoin his client PC’s to the new domain eventhough it was named the same thing. This is because the SID’s are different. If you have a few days you might as well convert the ost’s to pst’s and not worry about the backup if it might be a little shakey especially for four users.
