  • where are iTunes playlist and other files stored on Vista?

Posted on June 28th, 2009 servbit2 No comments

I have iTunes 8 installed on my new Vista machine. I also now have a seperate network storage device connected.
What I’d like to do is figure out how I can re-configure iTunes, and move any subsequent files, to my network storage drive (N:)
I’d like to know which files iTunes uses to store information that could occasionally change. For example, the playlists or the iTunes music locations, my iPod Nano information. I assume there are seperate files for all of these items? I have seen two instances of library files on my c:\users\… folder so I don’t understand why there are two…
I have already moved my iTunes music folder to the network drive (N:\iTunes)

Here is what I need for maximum point reward:
    1) tell me the names of all of the files (xml?) that iTunes keeps info in and where they would currently be located on a Vista computer.
    2) also tell me what info each file contains (playlist info, music location info, etc)
    3) give me good instructions on what to move/copy to my network drive so that when I use iTunes, my Nano info, playlist, library are all on the network drive.

I have a backup of my library files from my XP machine but I don’t know how to use these files since the location of the music has now changed. When I tried to use the music library file for my new setup, the playlist was there but they all had ?’s by their name (location is now different). Can I easily correct this?
As a point of reference regarding technical skills, I am highly computer technical, but inexperienced in iTunes related matters.

The only two files that iTunes uses for the kind of things you’re talking about are itunes library.itl and itunes music library.xml. They should be located in a folder called “itunes” usually within “My Documents\My Music” in XP. In Vista, they are in \Users\[your username]\Music\

itunes library.itl function: This file is a database of the songs in your library and the playlists you’ve created. Some song-specific data is saved in this file. If you delete the file, iTunes creates a new, empty copy when you open the application, but any playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you created is lost. The iTunes Library file is only used by iTunes.

    itunes music library.xml function:
This file contains some (but not all) of the same information stored in the iTunes Library file. The purpose of the iTunes Music Library.xml file is to make your music and playlists available to other applications on your computer. In Mac OS X other iLife applications (like iPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie) use this file to make it easier for you to add music from your iTunes library to your projects.

Basically all you should need to do is to move these two files to your network storage, then follow these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

  • Itunes - lost password

Running Windows XP Home addition 5.1 sp2
Forgot Itunes password; when I hit “Forgot password” (after trying to buy a song) it says: “The url could not be opened” - so I can’t even get Itunes to send my password to my email address.
I’m running Itunes 7.1.1.5 (most recent).
Any ideas? Is there another way to access itunes help?

  • Where does iTunes store its files/database?

Posted on June 28th, 2009 servbit2 No comments

I am working on a laptop for a friend that was stolen. She had a bunch of iTunes music that I’d like to recover if at all possible. So, where does iTunes store it’s music/database? I have my doubts that everything can be recovered, but perhaps I’ll get lucky.

Also, I’ve been playing with GetDataBack from Runtime Software to try to recover the deleted photos. Any other suggestions of software to use?

    Thanks in advance.

you have to check the folder in iTunes options to check where its storing her music files, for me its My Documents/iTunes/My Music folder :)

and if you are trying to recover Photos, getdataback is back, trust me, i have tried and it disappointed me like hell.
for best chances of recovery, try PC Inspector >> http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm

or try Easy Photo Recovery >> http://www.easyphotorecovery.com/

these 2 softwares managed to give all my deleted images back :)

  • How do I get my songs from one folder into Itunes

Posted on June 28th, 2009 servbit2 No comments

I backed up all my folders before installing a new drive and a new OS Vista Ultimate. I’ve installed iTunes 8 and I’ve searched here for a solution and I tried a few but none work. I need to get all my music from a folder on my computer into the iTunes folder and them get iTunes to recognize them. I’ve authorized the computer, but can’t figure this out. I have an ipod if that helps.

    Ok try this
    Edit>Preferences>Advanced> Both check boxes checked
As for the “Add folder” I think you are choosing “Add File”, Open “Add folder” select the folder, it shouldbe grayed and click on the accept button.

To recover your song from the iPod you can use Touch Copy

  • Backing Up ITunes

I would like to copy the entire ITunes collection to an external hard disk. The itunes software only allows me to copy to CD. What do I have to do to copy to external disk?

If you let iTunes manage your library your music is here
    C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\My documents\My music\iTunes\iTunes Music
So you just need to copy the folder to your external disk
If you want iTunes to run form the external disk
    In itunes
From the Edit menu>Preferences>Advanced first button [Modify] and select the path to your external disk
