  • Win Vista Home Preminm Serv Pak 1 won’t install properly

Posted on June 1st, 2009 servbit2 No comments

I have run the virus and adware scans previously and it was clean system. Now when I run the install it gets to the installing 3 of 3 100% and then reboots going back to the installing 3 of 3 and look like it will work but then loops on the 3 of 3 screen. I have restored to a previous point to the serv pak install and tried the install again but it does the same procedure all over. Any Ideas .. this is a dell inspiron 1420

    I believe it is the
C:\Windows\Software Distribution\Downloads folder. Don’t delete the folder just the contents. Also it is best to stop the updater service if doing that.
Although manually downloading and installing that file instead of the windows updater should have solved that. But you never know.
The code on the bluescreen will probably help to figure out why.

  • Windows repair install gone bad

Posted on June 1st, 2009 servbit2 No comments

I am doing a repair install on a windows xp home machine but used a xp pro install full version cd by mistake. I have a key code for xp pro full that I havent sold yet and used that to try and complete the upgrade planning to uninstall the upgrade after it finishes the start over with the correct xp home disk. Seemed like a good plan until windows refuses to take the key code on the COA sticker. Anyone know a way to cancel the upgrade? Choosing to boot to last know conifiguration that worked is useless as it goes back to the xp pro upgrade. HELP!!

    Give the following a try.

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. Start pressing the F8 key.
    3. On the Advanced Options menu, select Return to OS Choices Menu and press Enter.
    4. Select the Cancel Windows XP Setup option.

Hope this work. If not let me know and will find another solution.

  • Group Policy

Posted on June 1st, 2009 servbit2 No comments

I would like to know more about GPO Group Policy and i would like to implement this GPO in my office and kindly tell me how to setup this?

The best way to get started with group policy is to experiment with test user objects and test computer objects in a test OU. Before you get started read this excellent article which should tell you most all of the basics:

    http://www.petri.co.il/working_with_group_policy.htm

Remember to always test any group policy away from real users and real computers before you let it loose.

    Cheers,

    Hi -
Download this article from MS site. Complete reference about GPO

    Link - download.microsoft.com/download/0/0/4/0044470e-5f3a-4569-9255-91f932e4da3b/gpintro.doc

If really you want to Implement GPO in you production. Better create a test LAB (Virtual) Using VMWARE or Microsoft Virtual PC .

Or enroll in MS Virtual labs. You will find lots of Virtual Labs related to Group policy.

    MS virtual Lab Links:

    Hope its useful for you.

  • MSSQL 2005 IP block after n failed login attempts

Posted on June 1st, 2009 servbit2 No comments

Is there a way to have MSSQL 2005 block an IP address if someone tries to login to the SQL server with some sort of brute force password cracker? In going through our logs I see that there are several ip addresses hammering our sql server trying to login as SA or Root etc…

    Hi!

I don’t think so. Use long passphrase (25+ characters) instead of shorter complex password to secure admin accounts. Change passwords regulary. It’s not very likely that very long password will be successfully bruteforced with an online attack. Patch your servers regulary, it’s more likely that you will be attacked by exploiting vulnerabilty on your system.

I do not believe an option you want exists as part of SQL.
Where is the origin of the attack? Is there a firewall/IDS device in front of the sql server?

What is the operating system? If it is Windows and not encrypted, then you can use a common boot password reset tool. My favorite (it is free) is:
